Hearing Voices

A Laboratory (2013)

HEARING VOICES is an intense seminar by Nicole Beutler and Eric Ellingsen in which we will explore the phenomena of the phantom word to create a danced sound poem. Phantom word is a psychoacoustic effect based on perception and memory, discovered by the professor of psychology Diana Deutsch. The seminar seeks to engage these phenomena through experimentation, voice, body, repetition, repetition and movement. Phantom words allow the same objective words being said to be heard differently be each person. In this way, HEARING VOICES will engage the collective voice and the subjective ear. In this way, HEARING VOICES will be made as much by the people performing the work as by the audience listening to the work. With a choir of six to ten voices we will engage with existing texts and poems. Using a special sound poetry speaking technique involving looped breathing, what is familiar in words will become completely unique to the moment and the listener. Breathing exercises as well as, rapping, humming, dancing and the principals of self-organising systems, will be part of our experiment.
