During WE LIVE HERE, philosopher and essayist Marjan Slob (since April 'Denker des Vaderlands' for the next two years) joins us. Marjan wants to discuss 'affordances' with us. This lecture is open to the public.
'Affordances' is a concept of American psychologist James J. Gibson from his theory of the 'ecological approach to perception'. The concept of 'affordances' helps to think about how animals relate to their environment and how they make use of the opportunities provided by their biology. Each animal has a unique biology, senses and physical capabilities that allow them to perceive and respond to specific affordances in their environment. For example, an eagle has keen eyesight and can perceive affordances to see prey at long distances. The concept of affordances thus helps understand how animals tailor their perceptual abilities and actions to the environment in which they live.
The lecture will be held in English and takes place on Thursday 13th of July between 11:00 and 13:00 at BAU (Entrepotdok 4, Amsterdam). The lecture is free to attend. However, please register in advance at justa@nicolebeutlerprojects.n
